 What is Involved in Producing Light Pole Bases, or LPBs?

This allows you to save time and produce a more consistent product.  No special equipment is required, beyond what a typical precast facility already has.  You will need to be able to achieve a pour height of 9-feet for the tallest forms.

Step-by-Step Installation of Light Pole Base (LPB)

  1. Auger: Determine the location for the Light Pole Base (LPB) and auger, or excavate, a hole at the marked location. Hole diameter should be 6 to 12-inches larger than the diameter of the LPB. Auger or excavate to the required embedment depth plus 6-inches. The additional depth will allow for installation of the base material. The required embedment depth will be specified by the design engineer and is based upon the actual site conditions. The bottom of the auger or excavated hole should be relatively flat.
  2. Place the LPB by lowering it into a hole: The base can be lifted by threading two straps through the center of the LPB, or by attaching chains to the anchors located along the sides. Ensure that the conduit openings are aligned properly for the site and installation requirements. Once the LPB is in place, ensure that it is plumb, the top of the foundation is level, and the top surface elevation is set to the project requirements. Brace the LPB as required to maintain location and level until the unit can be backfilled.
  3. Backfill: Place backfill material according to project requirements. Crushed stone or granular fill (sand) is recommended for all LPBs. Backfill should be applied uniformly in 6 to 8-inch lifts, and compacted to 95% standard proctor density. Begin by backfilling to just below the large side openings, then install the required conduits through these openings and out the top of the LPB. Once conduit installation is complete, finish backfilling to the final grade elevation around the LPB perimeter.
